Speakers
Steve Hartley is the Executive Director of the Department of Planning and Environment’s Resilience and Urban Sustainability Division. Steve is leading work aimed at embedding sustainability and resilience into planning process, with the goal of improving the people’s lives and the sustainability of the places we live, work and love. This work includes embedding green infrastructure, water sensitive urban design and managing natural and human induced risks into strategic decision making, upfront assessment and design, triple bottom line decision making and program delivery. Steve is an ecological economist by training, and in his time with government has worked in policy, operational and regulatory roles across environmental and natural resource management including water, waste, native forestry, biodiversity and strategic planning.
Jan Fallding is a Registered Planner and Fellow of the Planning Institute of Australia. She is a freelance strategic and social impact planner, with over 30 years’ experience, based in the Hunter Valley and is a member of the NSW Shade Working Group.She consults to councils & state government agencies, primarily in regional NSW. Her planning interests are a diverse mix: healthy built environments; using demographic analysis to carefully frame planning policies; floodplain management and strategic planning & social impact in regional areas. Jan particularly enjoys collaborating with public health professionals to create more comfortable, healthier environments for all.
Dr Libby Gallagher is a landscape architect and director of Gallagher Studio. Libby has delivered innovative public domain, strategic and urban design projects whilst in practice in Australia, UK, Canada, and the Asia pacific. Libby has dedicated the last 12 years to researching the design and delivery of high-quality public spaces to address climate change and has completed a PHD focused on climate adaptation for urban streets. Gallagher studio’s Cool Streets pilot project in Western Sydney, based on this PHD research won an AILA 2017 National Award of Excellence. Her most recent commission Urban Tree Canopy – Targets and Controls for the NSW Government won the AILA Award of Excellence 2022 in landscape planning and a Shade smart award. She has taught in undergraduate and graduate programs at the University of New South Wales, the University of Technology Sydney and the University of Sydney.
As AILA CEO, Ben Stockwin has has a tremendous skill set in managing a diverse national organisation and gained an appreciation of the intersect between the natural, managed, and constructed environments. Issues around sustainability, nature deficit disorder, increasing population and climate change have been at the forefront of Ben’s work and he continues to integrate these into his role at AILA.
