Calling for expression of interest: AILA Committees

Dear Members, this is your chance to contribute to AILA and make a difference to the LA profession at perhaps one of the most critical times in the history of both.

Landscape Architecture’s time has truly come, and we invite to support AILA as it puts the profession at the forefront of post-COVID design and infrastructure.

By joining our committees and collaborating with like-minded people you will create the strategies and policies that will assist AILA to achieve its Vision and Mission;

There are currently five Committees open for nomination:

  • Climate Positive Committee
  • Connection to Country Committee
  • Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Committee
  • Gender Equity Committee
  • Membership Committee

There are also vacancies on the following three Committees:

  • Advocacy Committee 
  • Practice Committee
  • People Recognition Committee

Advocacy Committee

READ TERMS OF REFERENCE  

Purpose

To advise the AILA Board on matters of Advocacy policy and their implementation to advance AILA as the leader in sustaining people and places through improved design, planning, policy, and management as it relates to Urban Green Infrastructure.

Objectives of the Advocacy Committee

  • To establish AILA in a leadership role on matters of relevance to the organisation and its members.
  • To provide the intellectual base for advocacy to AILA’s target audiences.
  • To address members’ needs to support advancement of shared ideals as landscape architects.

Role and Responsibility of the Committee

To advise AILA Board on matters of advocacy policy and their implementation to advance AILA as leaders in sustaining people and places through design, planning, research, policy, and management.

  • Strategy 1. Annually review the existing ‘Position Statements’ for their alignment with membership views and organisational priorities. Develop an Annual Advocacy Plan.
  • Strategy 2. Develop and revise annually an Advocacy Plan for AILA, highlighting the top three policy priorities for the organisation. Proactively identify and coordinate advocacy responses to changes or threats in the landscape architecture operating environment.
  • Strategy 3. Respond to matters of priority policy interest as they arise (i.e. address calls for public comment, government or industry reports).
  • Strategy 4. Monitor current events to determine relevance to organisation and the potential need to adjust priorities.
  • Strategy 5. Provide advice and recommend support, where appropriate, to State groups in their advocacy around state and local government issues.

Climate Positive Committee

READ TERMS OF REFERENCE  

Purpose

  • Promote and deliver on the actions of the three volumes, as above
  • To support the growth and understanding of Climate Positive action for the broader profession 
  • To support the broader profession by advocating for change at the various scales
  • To support AILA and its members through the transition to Climate Positive.

Objectives of the Climate Positive Committee

  • The Committee will assist AILA in supporting the implementation of climate positive action (aligned with and guided by the principles outlined in the three volumes, visit the Climate Positive Design (aila.org.au) wepage to Access the Climate Positive Design Volumes and resources).
  • Recognising that there are many areas outlined in the position statement referred to above, it is recommended that the Committee prioritise these by forming specialised groups to focus their efforts. 

Role and Responsibility of the Committee

To advise AILA Board on matters of advocacy policy and their implementation to advance AILA as leaders in sustaining people and places through design, planning, research, policy, and management.

  • Set internal working groups guided by the objectives as set out in Appendix 1 | Guidelines on Objectives. Preferably, the objectives as set out above are led by members with relevant experience and skill-set to support their delivery.
  • Identify key immediate gaps in resources and training for members.Guide, delegate and co-ordinate State and territory climate working groups.
  • Provide member support to help with their understanding of their environmental and carbon footprint.
  • Progressive development of educational resources and continuing professional development outcomes for members including recommendations on priority training modules.
  • Support the CEO and the AILA Board in developing points of contact and relationships with similar committees in other institutes, government agencies, and political figures.
  • In conjunction with the lead author, Update the Volume 1 action plan and volume 2 guide by the end of the two-year term incorporating any updates and learning from actions, implementation, and member feedback.
   

Connection to Country Committee

 
Purpose
  • To identify, propose, support and advance Reconciliation with First Australians within AILA.
  • To support a change in the culture of landscape architecture in Australia (ethics, governance, education and practice), from its settler based origins to a respectful inclusion of multiple Aboriginal Countries and communities.
  • To enable greater capacity building for Indigenous leadership and representation within AILA activities including the integral support of Cultural Ambassadors and greater Indigenous membership.

Role and Responsibility of the Committee

  • Provide strategic advice to the Board and CEO for national directions related to Reconciliation across the organisation.
  • Monitor progress and completion of the AILA’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP).
  • Identify opportunities and culturally appropriate content to disseminate achievements against AILA’s Reflect RAP milestones to the broader AILA membership.
  • Review the Cultural Ambassador Governance Guideline to accompany the Terms of Reference.
  • Promote Welcome to Country and Acknowledgment of Country Protocols and practice notes and associated literature which support the AILA’s Reconciliation journey.
  • Foster a dialogue with AILA national committees Chairs to enable and support a better integration of the RAP and CtCC objectives. For example the EC and CPD committees.
  • Identify opportunities to fund RAP Actions and other Reconciliation activities at the National and State Chapter levels.
  • Encourage an environment whereby Chapter Executives can request guidance from the CtCC in relation to local Connection to Country issues or questions.
  • Commit to using the five (5) Dimensions of Reconciliation (Reconciliation Australia) as touchstones for the assessment of the work of AILA in progressing a reconciliation agenda.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Committee

READ DRAFT TERMS OF REFERENCE  

Purpose

AILA’s CPD program keeps landscape architects and landscape professionals up-to-date with the right knowledge and skills. To ensure that landscape architects are provided with appropriate Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to enable them to maintain the competencies required for ongoing registration and to practice landscape architecture at all stages of their professional career.

Objectives of Committee

  • To develop a CPD Plan for the content and delivery of CPD of members that embraces many different ways of delivery to ensure access to all members.
  • Increase opportunities for learning.
  • Investigate CPD requirements for an expanded AILA Registration Scheme (e.g. Urban Design).
  • Periodically review policies in consideration of any regulatory and industry change.
  • Encourage flexibility and reciprocity with other education providers to meet the widest possible range of CPD needs of members.
  • Monitor changes and needs in professional standards to ensure alignment of CPD programs and content.
  • Act as an advisory committee to the staff responsible for the management, development and delivery of Institute CPD activities and programs, including the Festival of Landscape Architecture (LA Festival).Foster links with government and other education providers in the area of CPD nationally and internationally.

Gender Equity Committee

READ TERMS OF REFERENCE  


Purpose

To provide advice and support to the AILA Board in setting and implementing activity that supports Gender Equity for the profession. 

Role and Responsibility of the Committee

The committee assists in the development and implementation of actions which support. 

  • Advocacy for Gender Equity within the Landscape Architect Profession.
  • Provision of feedback and advice to the Board in relation to gender equity and AILA Strategy, Policies and Services.
  • The identification, commissioning and communication of research relation to gender equity and the Landscape Architecture profession.
  • Contribution and support of AILA activities that support and promote gender equity.

Membership Committee

READ TERMS OF REFERENCE  

Purpose

The Membership Committee role is to review current policies relating to AILA membership and to develop strategies for membership growth and benefits offered.

Objectives of the Committee  

  • Review of membership fees and categories to present to the Board.
  • Support the implementation of a member survey.
  • Work with AILA staff to plan and support membership growth.
  • Review AILA membership application forms.

Role and Responsibility of the Committee

  • Review AILA Membership Policy.
  • Review of membership fees.
  • Review of membership categories/forms.
  • Review of membership registration applications.
  • Provide membership guidance to AILA staff.
  • Participate in quarterly membership meetings to discuss strategy and growth. 
  • Providing advice and recommendations on the future direction of membership and registration processes.

Practice Committee

READ TERMS OF REFERENCE  

Purpose

To review current policy and to develop new policy regarding AILA practice support and to develop and recommend strategies for improved membership support, services and benefits to the AILA board.

Objectives of the Practice Committee

  • Review existing practice support mechanisms and develop a practice support delivery strategy
  • Review and develop a strategy for practice notes and their future development
  • Review other Institutes’ services and benefits and develop a plan for AILA.
  • Recommend options for practice membership or “practice plus” solutions.

Role and Responsibility of the Committee

  • To undertake a needs analysis with the AILA CEO to develop a practice support plan, including the sequencing and on-going development of practice notes at an interval of no-less than one per quarter.
  • To work with the CEO to implement the Practice Support Plan including monitoring the on-going effectiveness.
  • To work and liaise with other committees and working groups to ensure a well-rounded approach to the development of practice notes.
  • To provide member/s to the Continuous Professional Development Framework Working Group.

People and Recognition Committee

READ TERMS OF REFERENCE  

Purpose

The purpose of the People Recognition Committee is to make recommendations to the AILA Board on matters regarding the recognition and the awarding of members for their outstanding contribution to both the professional and organisation.

Objectives of the People Recognition (ex Honours) Committee

  • Review and Revise the Awards Policy on a regular basis
    • Appointment of National Awards Jury Chair
  • Develop, Review and Revise an AILA Fellows Policy
    • Reviewing and updating Fellows criteria to make a recommendation to the Board
    • Assessing and reviewing Fellow nominations to make recommendations to the Board
  • Development of a People Recognition Policy
    • Including practicing, retired, and deceased members.
  • Recommendations for AILA nominations to international recognition programs
    • Including the nomination of members for significant awards and the provision of guidance on the usage of AILA post-nominals.

Time Commitment
Committees meet once quarterly on Wednesdays for one hour and in some cases, informally monthly also for the duration of an hour.

 

Further Information
Each of these committees has an impact on recommendations to the Board, Event Management, Policies and Procedures, Membership Regulatory and Recognition in expertise to act on the now and the future of LA, its Members and AILA.
Committees rely on volunteers and to recognise their work and contribution, this time attracts CPD Points. It further offers a sought-after experience in Committee Membership to boost career and skills development and gaining and in-depth understanding of the profession and its members, as well as working with industry qualified people at all levels.
