Biourbanism

Biourbanism, a book by Adrian McGregor FRLA, landscape architect, biourbanist, and founder and Chief Design Officer of McGregor Coxall, outlines the biourbamism model - ten interconnected bio and urban systems that together determine the health, prosperity and resilience of cities. The model is informed by new urban sciences, ecological science and landscape architecture theory.

Implementing the biourbanism model allows mayors, city planners, and governments to take a holistic view of cities and to manage the intricate interplay between these ten systems in a mutually beneficial way.  The book’s primary objective is to provide a practical tool that cities can adopt to increase prosperity and build resilience to climate change.

Biourbanism was awarded a 2023 AILA National Award of Excellence for Research, Policy and Communications. Of this project, the awards jury stated:

Biourbanism is an invaluable resource, offering a comprehensive guide for how we can foster healthier, more climate-resilient urban environments that thrive. The publication clearly communicates how to apply the concept of biourbanism in detail, with data and diagrams presented in a way that is both easy to interpret and enticing to read.

The research demonstrates intellectual rigour and is presented in a highly impactful, yet digestible format that is engaging and accessible. The jury commends the author for his dedication to researching the topic over what has been an extensive period and notes the significant effort required to produce what is a stimulating body of work.

The book is an excellent tool for advocating for the role of landscape architects in offering solutions for restoring and making better cities. Biourbanism makes a powerful contribution to the field that will have a broad impact on the future of landscape architecture and urban design.”
