Nestled on the outskirts of Boort in Victoria on Dja Dja Wurrung Country, Lake Boort is a natural wonder that boasts a rich indigenous history. The AILA award-winning Lake Boort Scarred Trees Master Plan builds awareness about and appreciation for this landscape as an unparalleled destination, where over 400 scarred trees and cooking mounds can be found.

The plan, developed by landscape architects Aspect Studios for Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation, offers a landscape vision for Lake Boort that engages visitors, benefits the community and protects Country.

The design process ensured input from a wide range of community members and stakeholders including Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation, Yung Balug Clan Members, Victorian State Government, Regional Development Victoria, Loddon Shire Council, Parks Victoria, North Central Catchment Management Authority, and Boort community members.

Alongside these collaborators, Aspect Studios identified how considered visitor access can create unique and immersive landscape experiences, whilst also providing greater protection of the site’s significant cultural and environmental values. The plan further articulates what the Dja Dja Wurrung peoples and local Boort community have long known, that the story of Lake Boort is of deep importance and is one that should be shared.
