A message from David Roberts, Qld Advocacy Chair and Mimi Tsai, National Advocacy Chair

It is great to see Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner’s budget announcement about the huge investment from Brisbane City Council into Brisbane Parks and Playgrounds and their commitment to ensuring Brisbane’s suburbs get even better as a great place to live, work and relax. We continue to encourage Brisbane City Council to engage more with local Landscape Architectural Design firms in delivering these projects and allow more small and medium design firms to participate in the BCC Design Panel.

Further advocacy discussion has been around a legacy for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games and how as landscape architects we have a great opportunity to influence this. Reflecting on the Sydney Olympics and the successes and challenges that have occurred there, Brisbane has a slightly different challenge due to the nature of the venues spread around the State.

From ‘cooling cities’ to ‘walkable canopy cover’, the ideas have been spread across numerous design groups and committees. AILA is looking into the possibility of a symposium event to bring together design colleagues for more discussion around this important part of the Brisbane Olympics so watch this space. As for the work we do as Landscape Architects, I encourage you to continue to strive to positively contribute to the projects you and your teams participate in daily. Work that is such an important role in the built environment - creating and protecting the environments where we live and work.

On the national level, ever since the national advocacy committee have produced AILA’s pre-election manifesto, the committee has been working collaboratively with other national subcommittees to produce a full version of the manifesto which will be promoted to all level of governments. This is to strengthen AILA as one of the leading professional organisations in this area. The committee are also reviewing all AILA’s position statements. If you have a current project that is suitable to be incorporated in a specific position statement, please feel free to contact us.

We invite all members to join us for the Queensland Annual Chapter Meeting (ACM) online next Tuesday 19 July at 5pm. This is a great opportunity to hear the Executive reflecting on the past twelve months, celebrating the achievements of the organisation and looking to the future. The AILA QLD sub-committees will give updates on what has been happening around the state. Help to shape the direction and key advocacy platforms for supporting the growth of the profession and AILA into the future and in the lead up to the 2032 Olympic games. See the ACM tile below to register.
