A message from Cass Gaisford, QLD Executive

Cass Gaisford, AILA QLD Executive

Whilst I am sure some of us will be glad for the warmer, longer days, I do have some impending disquiet about the predicted weather patterns coming our way this summer. After a very wet start to the year that resulted in flooding and devastation throughout much of SEQ and Northern NSW the Bureau of Meteorology has recently advised that the chances of a La Niña weather pattern returning for the back half of 2022 is now at 70%. They state that in areas where “soils and catchments are wet, and stream flows are high, further rainfall …. will increase the risk of flooding for eastern Australia”. This once again comes as a timely reminder of our role in the natural and built environment and how we as individuals and teams can play our part in mitigating the many and varied risks associated with our rapidly changing climate. AILA's Climate Positive Design page has some great resources, including the recently released Climate Positive Design series. Definitely worth a read to see how we can each do our part.

Tickets for the AILA national festival are selling like hotcakes, so get your ticket soon if you haven’t already. Registrations for the fringe festival tours open soon!

Our upcoming events include the Member Connect Session this Wednesday, Raylinc and WEEF Dark Skies event this Thursday (in Cairns) as well as the Brisbane City Council Inner Spark Event on 15 September. More detailed information on these events as well as some interesting work AILA QLD have been doing behind the scenes are included below in this months newsletter.

Enjoy,

Cass
