About the AILA Landscape Architecture Awards Program

The AILA Landscape Architecture Awards program provides a key vehicle for the promotion of the achievements and work of landscape architects in Australia.

The Awards process is an opportunity for public and peer recognition of landscape architect’s work, and demonstrates to industry, business, government and the wider community the positive impact the profession has on Australian lives through the planning and design of the built and natural environments.

Awards Category

Angus Bruce

Angus heads our global landscape architecture team from his base in our London studio. He has more than 30 years of experience on award-winning projects across Asia, Australia and Europe, including most recently the international awards winning 20ha transformation of Sydney’s Darling Harbour precinct. Over the course of his career, Angus has developed an innate understanding of how to bring innovative landscapes to life. His particular focus is on unleashing the power of landscape design to meet business, environmental and social needs – and create natural, sustainable places people love. Angus is known as one of the most energetic, enthusiastic forces in our business. He leads with heart and a real generosity that inspires everyone collaborating with him across disciplines, sectors and markets.

Dr Caroline Butler-Bowdon

Dr Caroline Butler‐Bowdon is the Executive Director, Public Spaces in Property and Place at NSW Department of Planning & Environment where she leads a team of strategists, policy-makers, place-managers, landscape architects, project managers and planners to create new, improved and activated public space across NSW. In this role she leads the Premier’s Priority, Greener Public Spaces focused on quality and walkability to great public spaces including over $500 million in programs across NSW creating new parks, playspaces and improved streetscapes. 

Bec Connelly

Rebecca Connelly is a landscape architect at Clover Green Space, based on Peramangk Country in the Adelaide Hills.  

Previously working for the City of Adelaide, she was involved in the strategic shaping, design and delivery of projects in the city and Park Lands. 

She seeks to create contextual, resilient and meaningful landscapes. This is an ethos shared within Clover and drives the delivery of quality outcomes across their portfolio of education, recreation, strategic and civic projects.   

Jefa Greenway

Jefa is a founding Director of Greenaway Architects, a University of Melbourne Senior Lecturer, and an AILA Cultural Ambassador. He’s championed Indigenous led design thinking for 3 decades as a registered architect in NSW/VIC, as co-founder of Indigenous Architecture + Design Victoria, and as co-author of the International Indigenous Design Charter. He’s a founding signatory of Architects Declare Australia, was recently included in the Qantas 100 Inspiring Australians and was a 2020 inductee into the Design Institute of Australia’s (DIA) ‘Hall of Fame’ signifying an outstanding contribution to Australian design.  

Gay Williamson, FAILA

Gay Williamson FAILA, has led design and urban planning teams in local, state and national governments. These teams have been characterized by their diversity, comprising landscape architects, architects, planners, historians, environmental and social scientists. The outputs from these teams have included award winning research, city planning strategies, infrastructure and landscape architecture projects.  A good many of these have contributed to the development and management of the Nation’s Capital. Gay has served on, chaired, developed and administered numerous design advisory panels, design competition and awards juries, again at local, state and national levels. 

Entry Process

Entry into the AILA Landscape Architecture Awards program is limited to a person, or a team where the landscape architectural component is under the substantive control or direction of a person, who is a Registered Landscape Architect or Member (financial) and principal of the practice (who is an owner or formal licensee of the copyright in the work being entered).

To be eligible for entry, projects (where applicable) must have at least reached practical completion and be in all other respects complete to the point of enabling proper assessment by the Jury, no later than 31 December 2022. Entries will be considered in the Chapter in which the project is located, regardless of the business address of the entrant. Any project located outside Australia will only be eligible for an award in the International category.
